TAMBÚ

What is Tambu

Tambú is one of the oldest traditional music forms of Curaçao, with deep roots in African heritage. Originally sung and played during gatherings of the enslaved, it became a way to express both sorrow and resistance, often through powerful call-and-response singing, handclaps, and the tambú drum.

The lyrics, sometimes disguised with metaphors, carried social messages and stories of daily life.

Today, Tambú remains a vital symbol of Curaçaoan identity, celebrated for its rhythm, history, and cultural strength.

Tambu styles

Within Tambú you do find variations in expression:

  • Some tambú is more ritual and traditional, with strong emphasis on the drum, clapping, and call-and-response singing.

  • Other tambú has been adapted for stage performance or festivals, where melodies, instruments, and presentation are modernized.

  • The dance of tambú also varies—sometimes more restrained (because it was once restricted), other times more expressive and open in cultural celebrations.
